Introduction of PLA

2020-07-30

Here is the introduction of PLA:

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a new kind of bio-based and renewable biodegradable material. PLA is made from starch materials proposed by renewable plant resources (such as maize, cassava, etc.). Glucose was obtained from starch by saccharification, then high purity lactic acid was produced by fermentation of glucose and certain strains, and then polylactic acid with certain molecular weight was synthesized by chemical synthesis. It has good biodegradability, can be completely degraded by microorganisms in nature under specific conditions after use, and eventually generate carbon dioxide and water, which does not pollute the environment. This is very beneficial to the protection of the environment, and is recognized as an environmentally friendly material.

Polylactic acid(PLA) has good thermal stability, processing temperature 170 - 230 C, good solvent resistance, can be processed in a variety of ways, such as extrusion, spinning, biaxial drawing, injection blow molding. In addition to biodegradability, the products made of polylactic acid have good biocompatibility, glossiness, transparency, handle and heat resistance. They also have certain bacterial resistance, flame retardancy and ultraviolet resistance. Therefore, they are widely used as packaging materials, fibers and nonwovens. PLA has many applications, such as extrusion, injection molding, film drawing, spinning and so on.

Performance:

1. Adequate sources of raw materials: The raw materials for PLA production are renewable resources such as corn, which need not use precious resources such as oil and wood. The depleted oil resources will play a protective role. China, which is facing increasing oil tension, also has unique strategic significance.

2. Biodegradability: PLA is characterized by excellent biodegradability, which can be decomposed into lactic acid in nature after waste, and finally hydrolyzed into carbon dioxide and water. Through plant photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water can form starch, which circulates in nature to form an ecological balance. Using PLA instead of plastics can solve the problem of white pollution that plagues the whole world.

3. Low energy consumption: In the production process, the use of petroleum-based resins such as PET and PA, which consume significantly less energy, is equivalent to 20-50% of the latter.
